Title of talk: Fixed point properties and amenability
Abstract: A semigroup is left amenable if there is a positive norm one linear functional on the C*-algebra of bounded complex valued functions which is invariant under left translations. A well known fixed point theorem of Day (1961) asserts that a semigroup S is left amenable if and only if whenever S acts on a non-empty compact convex subset X of a separated locally convex space as affine self maps, there is a common fixed point for S in X.
In this talk I shall discuss some recent results on the relation between amenability and fixed point properties in various settings.
